The truth behind Republican voter suppression

Republicans are the only one moving legislation across the country to suppress the vote though voter ID laws and massive voter purges. Why is it we don't see this coming from any Democrats? And why is it that these tactics are focused on those that vote Democratic? The ostensible and specious rationale behind the legislation is that we must prevent people from voting who are not eligible, as if this is a significant problem affecting elections. But time and again evidence is to the contrary, that cases of actual voter fraud are so miniscule as to be thousandths of 1% in elections. So what is the real reason behind this agenda?

Thom Hartmann discussed this in his radio show today. He played the audio from Paul Weyrich, co-founder of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). The latter has been behind many of these voter suppression laws being passed in droves by Republican State governors and legislatures. I found the video at this link, where Weyrich lays bare the real agenda behind ALEC. He says:

“Now many of our Christians have what I call the goo-goo syndrome — good government. They want everybody to vote. I don’t want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people, they never have been from the beginning of our country and they are not now. As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down.”

Recall that many companies are pulling out of membership in ALEC. So much so that ALEC, under this pressure,  has decided to discontinue the task force that wrote such model legislation. So there you have it, the real reason behind the disenfranchisement of Americans; these folks do not want democracy! Can it be any clearer?
